In 1997 a physicist from Buenos Aires, Juan Maldacena, proposed that certain universes can be described twice. Once from the inside, where there is depth, gravity, and everything that falls. Once from their edge, a surface with one dimension fewer, where nothing falls at all.

The two descriptions are not an object and its shadow. They are the same information, told in two ways, and nothing is lost in the translation. Physicists call it a duality. I prefer to think of it as two honest accounts of one event.

The extra dimension of the inside has a curious meaning: it is scale. To move inward is not to travel farther but to change how closely you are looking. Every depth was already written on the surface; it was only waiting for the right distance to be read.

Half a century earlier, another man from Buenos Aires had written a labyrinth from the inside. In Borges’s The House of Asterion, it is the Minotaur who speaks. He does not know he lives in a maze. He knows only open doors, repeating courtyards, a house the size of the world. The reader, standing at the edge of the page, suspects the shape long before the last line, spoken by Theseus to Ariadne, confirms it. One house, two accounts, and neither of them lies.

Ariadne’s thread is neither a map nor a story told from inside. It is the line both accounts share: from above, it draws the path; walked, it remembers every turn. It is the one record a labyrinth cannot falsify.

It occurred to me that this is what I do. A product begins as a single sentence, an idea someone says out loud on a Monday morning. By Friday it has users, constraints, an architecture, a deadline. The idea did not become false; it gained depth. The work is to keep both accounts true at once: the line anyone can read, and the plan that only reveals itself as you descend.

This site is built on that idea. The column on the left never leaves. It is the boundary. On the right is the inside: a circular labyrinth, and a thread winding toward its center. That thread is my work, each turn a role, a team, a problem that only made sense from within. Neither side is the summary of the other.

A note of rigor. The correspondence holds in a universe of negative curvature, which ours, as far as we know, is not. At the center of this site there is a picture of one, tiled in fourteen-sided rooms, where, as Asterion said of his house, everything is there many times, fourteen times. I kept the metaphor anyway.

{14,3} · Poincaré diskThree rooms meet at every corner. In this geometry every room is the same size, the rim is infinitely far away, and any room can be the center.

I have not reached the center. In this geometry every point can be one, and mine is wherever the thread is still being unwound. The story ends with a line to Ariadne: the Minotaur barely defended himself. He had been waiting for someone to come. At the center of this site there is no fight, only a blank line, waiting for yours.
